It did not begin with a plan, but with an intuition.

Drawing from her background in both fashion and photography, Hua Cai-Prossé became increasingly fascinated by the intersections between artistic disciplines and the transformative potential of creative exchange. Through encounters and conversations with fellow female artists, a shared awareness emerged: the need for greater visibility, connection, and mutual support within the artistic landscape.

What began as a common passion for making, experimenting, and exploring gradually evolved into a broader vision centred on representation, collaboration, and empowerment. The desire to bring women artists together, to make their stories visible, and to amplify their voices became the foundation of this initiative.

From this shared vision grew the idea of a collective—not a traditional organisation defined by fixed hierarchies, but a fluid and evolving network that fosters inspiration, solidarity, and space for artistic inquiry and experimentation.

Together, they create a multifaceted dialogue in which diverse disciplines, perspectives, and artistic practices meet, interact, and enrich one another.

The name The Femmes emerged later, almost naturally. Inspired by the pioneering Swedish artists’ circle De Fem—Anna Cassel, Hilma af Klint, Sigrid Hedman, Mathilda Nilsson, and Cornelia Cederberg—it is more than a title. It is a commitment.

A commitment to support, challenge, and uplift one another. To create the space they longed for rather than wait for it to be offered. And to celebrate the power of women artists who, through collaboration and solidarity, continue to redefine the possibilities of contemporary artistic practice.

WOMEN UPLIFT WOMEN.

Het begon niet met een plan, maar met een buikgevoel.

Vanuit haar achtergrond in mode en fotografie raakte Hua Cai-Prossé steeds meer gefascineerd door de raakvlakken tussen verschillende artistieke disciplines en de kracht van creatieve uitwisseling. In ontmoetingen en gesprekken met andere vrouwelijke kunstenaars groeide het besef dat er nood was aan meer zichtbaarheid, verbinding en onderlinge ondersteuning binnen het artistieke landschap.

Wat begon als een gedeelde passie voor creëren en experimenteren, evolueerde geleidelijk naar een bredere visie rond representatie, samenwerking en empowerment. De wens om vrouwelijke kunstenaars samen te brengen, hun verhalen zichtbaar te maken en hun stemmen te versterken, vormde daarbij het vertrekpunt.

Uit die gedeelde visie ontstond het idee voor een collectief: geen traditionele organisatie met vaste hiërarchieën, maar een dynamisch netwerk waarin kunstenaars elkaar inspireren, ondersteunen en ruimte creëren voor artistiek onderzoek en experiment.

Samen brengen zij een veelzijdige dialoog tot stand waarin verschillende disciplines, perspectieven en artistieke praktijken elkaar ontmoeten en versterken.

De naam The Femmes — afgeleid van de Zweedse kunstenaarsgroep De Fem, met als leden Anna Cassel, Hilma af Klint, Sigrid Hedman, Mathilda Nilsson en Cornelia Cederberg — kwam pas later, bijna terloops. Niet als een label, maar als een belofte. Een belofte dat alle Femmies elkaar zouden blijven ondersteunen en uitdagen; dat ze de ruimte die ze misten, zelf zouden creëren.

The Femmes is a collective of five eccentric female artists. Together, we’re creating an intimate and eclectic capsule collection: a unique artistic project where fashion and visual art converge in unexpected ways.

Five women artists are bringing their art to the catwalk and the streets. They’re recapturing their visibility and with it that of all women. Out of the shadows. Out there. In your face. Each of them designed a high end finished garment as a carrier for their art. Their own signature from drawing to finish. Each one silhouette in an edition of 15 pieces(worldwide), all sizes together. All pieces are signed and numbered and hand finished.

The Femmes is een collectief van vijf bevlogen vrouwelijke kunstenaars. Samen creëren we een intieme en eigenzinnige capsulecollectie: een artistiek project waarin mode en beeldende kunst verrassend samensmelten.

Vijf vrouwelijke artiesten brengen hun kunst op de catwalk en in het straatbeeld. Ze heroveren hun zichtbaarheid en daarmee die van alle vrouwen. Weg uit de schaduw. Out there. In your face. Elk van hen ontwierp een high-end afgewerkt kledingstuk als drager voor hun kunst. Eigen signatuur van tekening tot en met afwerking. Elk één silhouet in een editie van 15 stuks(wereldwijd). Alle stukken zijn gesigneerd en genummerd en met de hand afgewerkt.

Each artist is called to migrate between mediums, reimagining their practice as a wearable work of art: a singular silhouette, issued in a limited edition. These garments become embodied fictions—shaped by imagination and inner weather—extending the artist’s vision beyond the studio and into the living, moving body.

As a stylist within the collective, Hua Cai-Prossé supports Femmies in shaping their ideas. She moves seamlessly between imagination and technique, bridging the gap and making sure that creative visions and technical executions amplify each other.

Every two years, in deliberate alternation, we grant female artists a stage to unfold their singular visions of “female empowerment,” rendering it in bold, artistic light.

Once a Femmie, always a FEMMELY!

Elke kunstenaar wordt uitgedaagd om van drager te veranderen en ontwerpt een draagbaar kunstwerk: een uitgesproken silhouet in een gelimiteerde oplage. De gecreëerde kledingstukken weerspiegelen persoonlijke verbeelding en gemoedstoestand en functioneren als verlengstuk van de artistieke praktijk van de makers.

Als styliste binnen het collectief ondersteunt Hua Cai-Prossé artiesten in het vormgeven van hun ideeën. Ze fungeert als brug tussen verbeelding en techniek en zorgt ervoor dat artistieke vrijheid en technische realiteit elkaar versterken.

Afwisselend, om de twee jaar, geven we vrouwelijke artiesten een podium om hun unieke interpretatie van “vrouwelijk empowerment”, kunstzinnig te belichten.
